Comparative analyses of three swallow species (Aves, Passeriformes, Hirundinidae): Insights on karyotype evolution and genomic organization Genet. Mol. Biol.
Barcellos,Suziane Alves; Kretschmer,Rafael; Souza,Marcelo Santos de; Costa,Alice Lemos; Degrandi,Tiago Marafiga; Lopes,Cassiane Furlan; Ferguson-Smith,Malcolm A.; Pereira,Jorge; Oliveira,Edivaldo Herculano Correa de; Gunski,Ricardo José; Garnero,Analía del Valle.
Abstract Despite the richness of species in the Hirudinidae family, little is known about the genome organization of swallows. The Progne tapera species presents genetic and morphological difference when compared to other members of the same genus. Hence, the aims of this study were to analyze the chromosomal evolution of three species Progne tapera, Progne chalybea and Pygochelidon cyanoleuca - by comparative chromosome painting using two sets of probes, Gallus gallus and Zenaida auriculata, in order to determine chromosome homologies and the relationship between these species. All karyotypes exhibited 76 chromosomes with similar morphology, except for the 5th, 6th and 7th chromosome pairs in P. cyanoleuca. Additionally, comparative chromosome painting...

Evolution and development: some insights from evolutionary theory Anais da ABC (AABC)
DAVID,JEAN R..
Developmental biology and evolutionary biology are both mature integrative disciplines which started in the 19th century and then followed parallel and independent scientific pathways. Recently, a genetical component has stepped into both disciplines (developmental genetics and evolutionary genetics) pointing out the need for future convergent maturation. Indeed, the Evo-Devo approach is becoming popular among developmental biologists, based on the facts that distant groups share a common ancestry, that precise phylogenies can be worked out and that homologous genes often play similar roles during the development of very different organisms. In this essay, I try to show that the real future of Evo-Devo thinking is still broader. The evolutionary theory is...

Evolutionary side-steps Naturalis
Sluys, Ronald.
Many of the lower metazoans reach adulthood via complex developmental stages. Each of these stages is described with a specialized terminology, which is different for every major group of organisms. Biologists with a proper training in biodiversity may have learned about these complex issues during their undergraduate days, but many of us do no longer encounter the intricacies of lower metazoan development in later stages of our careers. We may be familiar with the ontogenetic stages in the group on which we specialize, but only a few will have practical knowledge and an overview of the larval stages in such groups as crustaceans, echinoderms, polychaetes, sipunculans, molluscs, flatworms, bryozans, and nemertines. Donald Williamson certainly belongs to...

Owen revisited: a reappraisal of morphology in evolutionary biology Naturalis
Minelli, Alessandro; Schram, Frederick R..
A new analysis within the framework of developmental genetics provides both raw data and theoretical support to the “old” morphology and suggests a new, more predictive, approach to the concept of homology. We distinguish between “positional homologues” and “structural homologues” as independent components of the more general concept of homology. We discuss some general patterns seen in the anatomy of animals and in their morphogenesis. Slack et al. (1993) advanced the concepts of the “zootype”, a particular spatial pattern of gene expression, and the “phylotype”, a particular stage of embryonic development that expresses the zootype. We build upon these concepts and expand them. This allows us to propose some additional phylotypes (arthrotype, cyclotype,...

The anatomy, terminology, and homology of acrorhagi and pseudoacrorhagi in sea anemones Naturalis
Daly, M..
The morphology of the column margin is an especially important feature in the taxonomy and biology of members of the sea anemone family Actiniidae. Despite the importance of marginal structures, their anatomy and the terminology describing them is poorly delimited. Consequently, homologies of the components of the marginal structures are poorly understood and taxonomies that depend on the presence, absence, or particular manifestation of marginal structures are confused. I review and synthesize anatomical descriptions of the marginal structures and find that they consist of two parts: a projection of the column and a holotrich-dense pad (= acrorhagus) that is histologically differentiated from the surrounding tissues. Although acrorhagi are functionally...

The Floral Scales in Hellmuthia (Cyperaceae, Cyperoideae) and Paramapania (Cyperaceae, Mapanioideae): An Ontogenetic Study Naturalis
Vrijdaghs, A.; Goetghebeur, P.; Smets, E.; Muasya, A..
Background and Aims In 1976 the monotypic genus Hellmuthia was placed in the Hypolytreae s.l., but was subsequently ascribed to the Mapanioideae, tribe Chrysitricheae, mainly because of the presence in Hellmuthia of two lateral, mapanioid-like floral scales with ciliated keels, the anatomy of the nutlet, the embryo and the inflorescence. Recently, based on cladistic analyses and supported by pollen ontogenetic evidence, Hellmuthia was transferred to a Cyperaceae, tribe Cypereae, clade mainly consisting of Ficinia and Isolepis. In this study, the floral ontogeny in Hellmuthia was investigated and compared with the floral ontogeny in Paramapania, with special attention for the floral scales. Methods Freshly collected inflorescences of Hellmuthia...
